Console Servers - the Lifeline for IT Administrators

Corporate networks operate 24/7. To operate these networks safely, securely and stably, it is essential to accurately grasp and manage the operational status of network devices such as servers and routers under strong security.

The console server SmartCS series can accommodate up to 48 console ports, facilitating the construction of a lifeline that allows reliable access to target devices even in the event of a network failure.

Console Consolidation

The management serial port (physical console port) of various network devices is the "last lifeline" that can be reliably accessed at any time, and also plays a very important role in outputting messages such as equipment failure.

A console server consolidates these console ports, enabling centralized management.
By placing SmartCS to a management network separate from the service network, it is possible to access the management console of network devices via SmartCS even during network device failure. Telnet / SSH is supported for access to the SmartCS from the operating terminal, allowing secure console port access over LAN/WAN.

Logging

SmartCS not only provides access to the console port of a network device but also has the ability to log communications that pass through the console port.
The console port outputs various important messages during the process of starting/stopping the device, and when a failure occurs as well as during normal operation. These messages are automatically stored inside SmartCS and can be sent in various ways such as FTP, TFTP, NFS, syslog, and email.

One example is the acquisition and automatic transfer of operation logs between the device and the management terminal.
In environments where the acquisition of operation logs is required from a security perspective, the combination of SmartCS and various network servers makes it easy to build an automatic acquisition system for operation logs.

Security

SmartCS provides secure console access through access control and encryption. Access methods can be set for each port, and ports can be registered for users with access rights to the ports and the groups to which the users belong. This ensures that access to unauthorized ports is prevented.

Furthermore, by using RADIUS/TACACS+ servers, a common access policy can be applied even in a large-scale network where multiple console servers are operated.
